Kim Schein Is Mia's Best Friend
Kim is friendly to people she knows, especially Mia. When Kim and Mia first started high school they hated each other for an unknown reason. One day at school it was unanimous between them that they would have a physical fight. Shortly after the fight they started talking more and more, and eventually they became best friends and have never had a fight since then.
Kim is a flat character because she does no undergo a very large change in the course of the novel. The biggest change she had was when Mia was in the hospital and she was very sad, but she didn't want to show her emotions to try and stay strong.

I chose the song "Hammer To Fall" by Queen to represent Kim because she is kind of a badass who wants everyone to know that she is her own person.
The line "What the hell we fighting for? Just surrender and it won't hurt at all" portrays Kim's relationship with Mia when they first met. Because they stopped fighting with each other they ended up becoming best friends. |
The Lyrics:
Yeah/ Here we stand or here we fall
/History won't care at all/ Make the bed, light the light/ Lady mercy won't be home tonight/ Yeah, you don't waste no time at all/ Don't hear the bell but you answer the call/ It comes to you as to us all/ Hey, we're just waiting/ For the hammer to fall - yeah/ Oh every night, and every day/ A little piece of you is falling away/ But lift your face, the western way, baby/ Build your muscles as your body decays/ Yeah, toe your line and play their game/ Yeah, let the anesthetic cover it all/ Till one day they call your name/ You know it's time for the hammer to fall - yeah/ Rich or poor or famous for/ Your truth it's all the same - oh no - oh no/ Oh lock your door but rain is pouring/ Through your window pane - oh no - yeah/ Baby now your struggle's all vain/ Oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh/ For we who grew up tall and proud/ In the shadow of the mushroom cloud/ Convinced our voices can't be heard/ We just wanna scream it louder and louder and louder/ What the hell we fighting for?/ Ah, just surrender and it won't hurt at all/ You just got time to say your prayers/ Eh, while you're waiting for the hammer to hammer to fall/ Hey, yes, it's starting to fall eh, hammer, you know/ Yeah, hammer to fall, woo, ah, hey, eh woo woo, ha eh hammer/ Waiting for the hammer to fall baby/ Yeah yeah while you're waiting for the hammer to fall/ Give it to me one more time |
Quote From The Book:
While Kim was visiting Mia in the hospital she talked to her about what new things had happened to her in the past few days, and what was happening in the hospital. Before she left Mia's room she said, "There are like twenty people out in that waiting room right now. Some of them are related to you. Some of them are not. But we're all your family."
She stops now. Leans over me so that the wisps of her hair tickle my face. She kisses me on the forehead. "You still have a family," she whispers.
[Page 220] This quote really shows that Kim values her relationship with Mia a lot, and that she, and everyone else, would be distraught if she did not wake up. Even though Mia's immediate family has been torn apart by the accident, she still has a family made up of all her friends.
