Mia Hall Is The Main Character
Mia is a seventeen year old cellist who has so much ahead of her. She loves her family, boyfriend, and best friend, and they all love her back. She is a quiet individual who prefers to keep to herself.
While she was in the car with her family they got into an accident which caused Mia to fall into a coma. Throughout the time that she is in the coma, her feelings towards he boyfriend change drastically. Mia is a dynamic character because in the beginning of the book she was deeply in love with her boyfriend, and near the end she wasn't so sure if she still felt the same way. She was confused because she wasn't sure where their relationship was heading. She wanted to go to New York to attend Julliard, whereas Adam wanted to stay in Oregon, and she was afraid that the distance would eventually drive them apart.

I think that the song "Music Again" by Adam Lambert represents Mia very well, because, in one of the first few flashbacks in the novel, Mia was going to quit playing the cello to try a new instrument to follow the footsteps of her parents. But then Mia met Adam and started to fall in love with him. Adam and Kim helped convince Mia to continue playing the cello because it is a part of her, and she does not need to always try to please other people.

Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. - William Ernest Henley 1875 - |
The poem "Invictus" written by William Ernest Henley portrays Mia's journey in the novel by explaining how in the end everything is up to her. The two lines, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul" really capture what Mia was going through in the hospital. It was completely up to her if she would wake up or quietly pass away. |
